Welcome to the website of Optolab BS, a Laboratory of excellence at the University of Brescia (Italy), committed to research and development, industrial liaisons, start-ups, development, testing, and teaching/education and consultancy in the fields of vision, optoelectronics, lasers, optics and their applications.

The Laboratory activity in Vision includes three-dimensional and two-dimensional vision, camera calibration, development of range cameras for reverse engineering, 3-D measurement and quality control, non destructive testing, biomedical imaging, vision for cultural heritage documentation and forensics. Vision is also applied to robotic cells for enhanced flexibility, and to the on-line quality control of industrial processes such as laser aluminum welding.

The aim of this project is to develop and test novel image processing algorithms for image deconvolution and analysis specifically designed for real time, hardware-independent operations. The final goal is to share the image analysis capabilities using cloud computing techniques, by means of a specifically developed web-based system.

This project involves a lasting collaboration between the faculty at Universitá degli Studi di Brescia and the Mechanical Engineering department at MIT. It is supported by the CARIPLO UniBS-MIT-MechE project, a  faculty exchange program agreement designed to promote new long term scientific collaborations and to consolidate  existing collaborations  between faculty members of UniBS and MIT-MechE.

The faculties involved into this program are Prof. Giovanna Sansoni, for the University of Brescia, and Prof. Forbes Dewey, for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

T4SM lectureTOOLS for SMART MINDS (T4SM) and the Department of Information Engineering at the University of Brescia (DII), Italy, work together in advanced education courses, using the Smartphone & Cross-platform Communication Toolkit (SCCT), for smart, flexible and reliable cross-platform communication among heterogeneous devices.

In the era of tablets, smart-phones, Ethernet and Cloud computing technologies, the University provides students with the most advanced tools from T4SM, for remote control of production lines, in the LabVIEW environment.

Dr. Claudio Vivante, the CEO of T4SM revealed a very skilled teacher when he came to the DII laboratory to introduce students to the world of SCCT-based communication (see the figure on the left). From now on, students will use their phones not only for playing games, chatting and sms-ing: they will use them also for communicating, controlling, stopping, triggering and logging their instrumentation.

Doing this tasks is extremely simple: download the FREE demos and the application libraries for your mobile platform, come at the DII Labs, and develop  your own application using the LabView kernels from T4SM!

Look at the  video to appreciate how 3D vision combined to a robot arm can increase the system flexibility in picking operations. The robot is a DENSO VS-6556G system. A laser slit is mounted close to the end effector, and scans the scene. Suitable 2D geometric Template Matching is used to get information on the scene. Enjoy the NEW video!
